Asia’s ancient towns and cities have always made me curious about the old days of that country. I have seen historical paths when living in Hanoi and visiting George Town in Malaysia. And while Fenghuang old town in China and Bukchon Hanok village in Korea are in my bucket list, there’s a gem hidden in the middle of Vietnam that I want to visit again, to read the story of different culture exchange and influence of the old days.

The ancient town is located in Vietnam’s central Quang Nam Province, on the north bank near the mouth of the Thu Bon River. Hoi An has been through a few centuries of history, but still remains as it was on the very first day of its being born.

A slow stroll through town reveals its gems. Hoi An has to this days well preserved its most sacred treasure, the centuries-old architecture. Its two main historical landmarks were occupied by the Japanese, Chinese, and the Western (Dutch and Spanish) during the 16th and 17th centuries. During the period of the China trade, the town was called Hai Pho (Sea Town) in Vietnamese. Then it was known to the French and Spanish as Faifo, a major international port city.
